How this under painting…
became this painting…
‘Frida & Me’ Original Acrylic on Canvas ~ 18″ x 36″ © 2016 Tanya Cole
I first started painting on the canvas that became Frida’s Courage at the same time as I painted my very first Frida…a whimsical Frida.
This one. Simply called ‘Frida’…
I was inspired to create a painting that conveyed the story of the connection between me/all those women/artists/people who love, adore and revere Frida,
her art and her journey and story. So the underpainting lady was at first not Frida, but you and me.
She was initially called ‘Frida and Me’ and then she changed to ‘Frida on My Mind’.
The bird wasn’t initially on her shoulder. It was just the woman by herself.
But I knew that this painting needed more, as it was on a journey of its own.
I painted in the bird and for a brief time I named the painting ‘Let Open Minds & Open Hearts Fly’ and popped it in my Solo Exhibition ‘Archetypal Dreaming’.
You can read about it here. >>>http://tanyacolearts.com/archetypal-dreaming-process-portals-portraits-solo-exhibition/
I loved that it took a while to decide what it needed to become.
After the exhibition I decided that it did need to become a full Frida painting and
by that time, I had got braver at painting more realistic proportioned faces and so ‘Frida’s Courage’ was born.
It wasn’t until afterwards that I realised the connection and reflection between my bravery in taking risks in painting and the naming of the piece as ‘Frida’s Courage!
And I think Frida also epitomised the ‘Open Minds & Open Hearts Flying’.
For Frida was known to have been revolutionary in her thinking and all for liberating herself, her culture, people, country and women.
So lots and lots of layers. Of paint and concepts!
I have learned to trust and let go with each painting. To allow them the space to be birthed, reborn, on hold and redelivered.
Each painting takes me on a journey, is a reflection of my soul and artists journey, and also tells a story about the subject.
Metaphors and deeper meaning must never be undervalued and the more layers and journeys the a canvas goes on, the more interesting the painting!
