"Open your eyes to see your own spirit illuminated. Any way you externalize your inner vision can make your spirit visible to you. A story, a drawing, a joke, a garden, a love poem, a dance, a song, a building – all help you see that there are moments in your life that are sacred. The moment you see your spirit is the moment your heart opens. When you glimpse your spirit you gasp and cry, you feel emotion, you know who you are. That is the moment you begin to heal." Michael Samuels, M.D
We are all so very busy living in our heads and operating from our thoughts and reactive emotions. We tend to be in a hurry to reach life stages. I know for me, I was very focused on getting my degree, meeting the man of my dreams, carving out a career and having a family. I have now achieved all of these beautiful 'things' but there is something as big if not bigger on a deep personal level that I am yet to achieve and to achieve it ongoing, on a daily basis...Knowing me, loving me, connecting with my soul and participating in those things that makes my heart sing and soul soar.
I think as women, we are fine tuned to create, to be creative and access the inherent joy in creating. The urge runs like a constant stream through our veins. We know it's there asking of us but we often don't know how to stop and turn to it and connect with it. We often don't realise just how important being at one with this urge is, on our emotional, physical and spiritual health and wellbeing. Whilst we are pursuing other things outside of ourselves there is a type of starvation going on deep within our Souls. Falling pregnant and having babies is one way that can allow us to come close to reconnecting with our joyful souls. The life we conceived, birthed and are nurturing, fills us with that awe and wonder and reflects our spirits back to us. We see and feel our true selves. But as our blessed little beings grow and their ego minds let themselves be known and separate from us as they form their own individual selves, we gradually lose that link to our mindful presence and creative spirit and then our ego's and thoughts creep back as the main place we function from.
We owe it to ourselves to find what it is that brings us joy, what lights us up and makes us feel alive. To know it and do it; then becomes a form of self love and self honouring. I know, from experience that when I allow myself to be in a quiet place (my studio) and I choose to listen to music that evokes emotion and then I place paint and a brush or a pencil in my hand, something wonderful and deep and awe inspiring and just plain JOYFUL happens! I find me. I find peace. I find the wild woman in me. I meet my women ancestors. I feel such incredible connectedness and love for myself and others. I feel enormous hope and excitement and a deep bubble of possibility forms. I then express this feeling onto paper or canvas. What I see speaks back to me and so we journey together for a short time. At the end of the journey, in that moment, I see a part of me and others expressed there on the canvas. It came via my soul. I was a conduit in that moment and I allowed myself to be and so wanted to be , because it felt so blissful to be in that state.
I believe we can all access this feeling and this place. What's more, once we start to become more creative on a daily basis; we start to live and experience all facets of lives in a creatively fulfilling way.
