Here is a quick update on what’s been happening here at www.tanyacolearts.com ~ I have so much to tell!!
NEWS ~ ARTY BEGINNINGS, NEW MEDIUMS & THEMES, THE ARCHIBALD!
You’ll remember at the beginning of the year I took myself of on a little learning adventure, teaching myself how to paint with oil paints? Well, I have fallen in love with them! It’s so true what other artists say; oil paints really are such a pleasure to paint with…they are ever so buttery and luscious! And the pigment saturation and luminosity on the substrate is divine…particularly for portraits! I know I am exclaiming a lot!! But I am excited about them….calming my self down…now.
Anyway, I painted my first Frida in Oils ~
I have also been dabbling with a few smaller highly textured works in oils, of abstract florals ~

In addition to adding oils into my artists tool belt, I also embarked on a series of paintings that I have been wanting to explore for several years. I was, (in retrospect) waiting for the right time to do it/them justice. Twenty years ago I experienced a life changing trip to the top of the Kimberley’s in the North West of Western Australia; to a small Indigenous community called Kalumburu. You can read about this amazing experience here, and how spending time with Indigenous Australians deeply influenced me as a person, as an OT and as an Artist. In my heart, for some time, I had wanted to paint the Indigenous Australian children who had touched my soul so deeply, so long ago. And with the appropriate and very kind permissions from (** Artwork photo reference credits) Freedom Garvey-Warr & Kalumburu Photography Collective member Maria Fredericks and the children and their parents, I am so happy to say that I have finally started! ~
NEWS NEWS NEWS!
THE ARCHIBALD (see middle painting above)!
After several collectors encouraged me to enter the Archibald Prize and after discussions with one gorgeous collector in particular; I contacted Dr Tracy Westerman (Western Australian of the Year 2018) and she graciously agreed to sit for me to paint her and enter the piece in the Archibald Prize 2018! Dr Westerman is a highly accomplished Indigenous Psychologist who has received International recognition for her dedicated work in developing unique screening/assessment tools, and delivery of suicide prevention programs in remote areas within Australia. I will be writing a blog post about Dr Westerman with progress photo’s describing my journey with painting this amazing woman. I will link to that here in a few days.
AUTUMN GROUP EXHIBITION
Thanks to the lovely Kaye Guthrie Adonis art activator extraordinaire! ~ I was invited to participate in an Autumn Group Art Exhibition along with 4 other amazing artists at the beautiful Robert Oately Winery in Margaret River. Always fun at the artists meet & greet to share a glass or three, of wine!
VASSE ART AWARDS
I love this event ~ so well organised!
No awards for me for my ‘See Me’ girl, but plenty of interest & positive comments, so I am happy with that. Plus, great exposure getting featured in the paper too! I also think this girls journey is not finished and I have a little idea that I will share more about soon!
I will be entering this award once more in 2020
The Margaret River Region Open Studios is currently running now until the 13th May. I have thrown open my studio doors and enjoying lots of art loving visitors chatting about our mutual love of art ~ so fun! Once again, great exposure being featured in the Travel Guide lift out in the West Australian newspaper. If you are local, come and visit myself and some of the other 130 artists involved in the event! Again, another fabulously organised event in the South West which I am proud to be a part of.
CURRENT WORKS IN PROGRESS
I continue to explore my passion for supporting Indigenous First People’s the world over in my artwork with these current paintings in progress ~
* The far left painting has pre sold however, please use the contact tab for details/availability, if there is a particular piece you are interested in.
As you know, I was invited to be a guest teacher in Let’s Face It 2018 organised by the gorgeous Kara Bullock ~ a year long portrait painting course studying the Masters!
Well, the course is well and truly underway and everyone is having a fantastic time learning & creating! My lesson on Claude Monet for the Impressionist Movement went live in March and it has been so wonderful seeing students creations. I will be filming my main lesson on Frida Kahlo for the Surrealist Movement this month, with the lesson going live in the online classroom in June. It is never too late to join as the lessons remain accessible and people are still catching up after joining recently. Click here, if you would like to find out more information or join.
